SURROUND STAKES

Each year in autumn Sydney hosts the premier racing carnival in New South Wales. From February through until the end of April, punters, spectators and other racing enthusiasts are treated to a plethora of elite race days held at state’s major racecourses, primarily the Royal Randwick and Rosehill Gardens. The first Group 1 event of the carnival is the Chipping Norton Stakes in March at Randwick. As well as the feature race of the day the turf is ripped up by an excellent field of runners contending in the Group 2 Surround Stakes.

The Surround Stakes is a 1400m race for three-year-old fillies at set weights worth $150 000. Earlier in the carnival the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) run under the same conditions for fillies is an excellent lead-up event to the Surround Stakes. Both races suit good quality females and the Light Fingers/Surround Stakes double is a very popular wager at the carnival. The last filly to win both races in the same season was Gold Edition in 2007. Watching for dominant spring females with a good chance in these sprint races is a great tip for punters, not only with win bets but place bets in the races as well.

The Surround Stakes is often used as a lead-up to some of the carnival’s more prestigious and lucrative three-year-old events including the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) held the following week and the premier Group 1 fillies’ event, Arrowfield Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill the next month. Spotting the leading fillies in this earlier race can lead to some excellent tips and wagering successes throughout the carnival!

The Surround Stakes was originally run at the other racecourse operated by the Australian Jockey Club (AJC), Warwick Farm. It was first run in 1979 as a Group 3 event and gained Group 2 status in 1986. The increased status and importance of this quality fillies’ event now means some really generous betting pools are open on the Surround Stakes every year. Bookies offer a complete range of bet types on the race so make sure you jump online and check out the odds for the next Surround Stakes.
